Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie are sent to live with their reclusive uncle in his mysterious country home. Lucy soon discovers a wardrobe that hides a doorway into the magical world of Narnia. Narnia was once a peaceful land of talking beasts, dwarfs, giants, and fauns.
But an evil spell has been cast on Narnia and it is now ruled by the White Witch, who has transformed it into a frozen place, where it is 'always winter, but never Christmas'. To the creatures of Narnia, the children now represent hope. Led by the powerful lion, Aslan, the children must defeat the White Witch and free all of Narnia from her icy spell.
The Narnia Chronicles, first published in 1950, have been and remain some of the most enduringly popular children's books ever published.
The best-known book in the series, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, has been translated into 29 languages.
Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898. As a child, he was fascinated by the fairy tales, myths and ancient legends recounted to him by his Irish nurse. The image of a faun carrying parcels and an umbrella in a snowy wood came to him when he was 16. However, it was not until many years later as a professor at Cambridge University that the faun was joined by an evil queen and a magnificent lion.
